Siloso’s Love

Dear Rheia,

If Daddy had to pick a place that witnessed the birth of love, the struggles, and countless memories, it would be Siloso.

Siloso is where Daddy confessed his love to your mum. In those days, all we had was love—through age, struggles, and everything in between. We could visit the beach at 9 p.m., sit down, look up at the stars, and share secrets with laughter.

Before “staycation” became popular, we had already spent many nights at Siloso. Daddy would always bring a fruit cake for Mummy, sometimes flowers too. I remember leaving the cake untouched in the hotel fridge several times.

We always wished those stays could be longer, so I wouldn’t have to send your mummy to the taxi stand for her departure.

When we were in different countries, we would talk on the phone from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m., and still, we wanted to see each other the next day. Siloso was also the place your mum wanted Daddy to bring her if we ever had any disputes, where I would ask for her forgiveness.

Yes, this is the place. Even in the saddest moments, or through hurtful words, love’s kindness remained. Daddy is grateful that, in the end, regardless of anything or anyone, Daddy can express the love one more time, even in front of you—though you may have been too young to remember.

“I loved you more than you’ll ever know, so that you remember love.”
